Crisis in the maritime connection forces traders to ration sales of eggs, potatoes and onions

Cidade de Nova Sintra, December 18, 2025 (Bravanews) - The persistent crisis in the maritime connection to the island of Brava is already beginning to be felt more intensely in the daily lives of the population. In recent days, some local traders have decided to ration the sale of essential products such as eggs, potatoes and onions, in an attempt to avoid a total stock-out while waiting for cargo transport to normalize.

According to Bravanews, the irregularity of cargo ship voyages, combined with constant delays and cancellations, has made it difficult for commercial establishments to restock on time. As a result, products that are widely consumed and considered staples in families' diets are now sold in limited quantities per customer.

Traders contacted admit that the decision was not easy, but consider it necessary to ensure that as many families as possible have access to these goods. "If we sell without control, in a few days we'll have nothing. So we try to make sure that everyone can take at least the minimum," explained a mini-market manager, who preferred not to be identified.

The situation worries mainly large families and people with lower purchasing power, who fear a possible rise in prices if the crisis in maritime transport continues. There are also fears that other products will be rationed in the coming days if there is no quick response from the competent authorities.

The population is once again calling on the government and the entities responsible for the maritime sector to find urgent and effective solutions, in order to guarantee regular connections with the island of Brava. For many residents, the current situation demonstrates, once again, the island's vulnerability to problems in maritime transport, with direct impacts on the local economy and people's lives.
